When was the last time you visited your local library? I don’t know about you, but I went all the time as a kid. These days, though, so many people find themselves “too busy” with their other commitments to make the trip, and many more don’t even know what the library does besides lend out books and movies. But libraries offer so much more, from classes to technology, all the way to clubs! Here are just a few reasons why you should make a stop at your local library:

  1. They’re usually free! Most libraries offer free library cards to patrons, though you often need to bring proof that you’re a resident of the area. This card is your ticket to all the books and movies and periodicals that the library offers, so take advantage of it! In addition, a library card usually gets you access to free WiFi and library computers.
  2. They’re connected to other libraries. Depending on where you live, your local library may belong to a network of other libraries that share materials. What does that mean? If you’re really looking for a specific book or other material, the library may be able to request it from another library in a different town, giving you access to materials from a much larger area.
  3. They sponsor events. Most libraries host a full schedule of free community events throughout the year, from guest speakers to visits from authors or artists to used book sales. Your local library might also sponsor a book club or two, or host classes and workshops that are free to the community.
  4. Librarians know how to find information. They may not know everything, but librarians can usually point you in the direction of the information you’re looking for. Whether it’s a newfound interest based on another book you read or the topic of a paper for a class, if you’re having trouble finding resources (or even if you aren’t) your local or school library can be a great help.

Whether you are a frequent visitor to your local library or have hardly been inside, it’s important to be aware of all the great opportunities and services that libraries offer. Of course you can go and check out books or movies, but libraries offer so much more than that!
