Are you worried you might be pregnant but don’t know how to tell? Early pregnancy symptoms can be tricky as many of them mimic PMS symptoms. How can you know if what you’re experiencing is a pregnancy symptom or just a fluke?

Let’s break down some of the most common early pregnancy symptoms to help ease your mind.

Early pregnancy symptoms:

  • Missed period
  • Tender and/or swollen breasts
  • Nausea with or without vomiting
  • Increased urination
  • Extreme fatigue

Am I Pregnant? Symptom 1:

Missed period

This one can be tricky because not every woman has a consistent cycle. If you typically have a very regular cycle and a week or more has passed since your period should have started, a pregnancy test is the way to go. This is particularly true if your missed period is in conjunction with one or more of the additional symptoms listed below.

Harmony Women’s Care offers free lab quality pregnancy tests. Call today to schedule a one-hour pregnancy confirmation appointment.

Am I Pregnant? Symptom 2:

Tender and/or swollen breasts

Are your breasts suddenly tender to the touch? Maybe you are experiencing sudden and unexpected pangs of pain or just general achiness throughout the area? This could be a sign of pregnancy. During pregnancy, hormone levels increase along with blood flow and fluid retention. This trifecta of changes to the breasts can cause them to feel swollen, sore, and tender to the touch. These changes are necessary as your body begins to prepare for a baby but can also occur as hormones fluctuate throughout your cycle.

Am I Pregnant? Symptom 3:

Nausea with or without vomiting

Fluctuating hormones can wreak havoc on your digestive system and cause nausea and vomiting. This is believed to be caused by the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) which the female body begins producing shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. You may also notice that certain smells can send you on a mad dash to the bathroom.

You may even notice unusual cravings or a sudden aversion to foods you normally enjoy. Pay careful attention to what your body is telling you and take care of yourself.

    Am I Pregnant? Symptom 4:

    Increased urination

If you find yourself in the bathroom more than usual, you could be pregnant. The culprits here are the hormones progesterone and hCG which increase the blood flow to your pelvic area. This increased blood flow is necessary to accommodate a growing baby, but it can certainly lead to this bothersome and time-consuming side effect.

    Am I Pregnant? Symptom 5:

    Extreme fatigue

If you have never been pregnant before, imagine a time in your life when you have been so exhausted you found it difficult to function. Completing daily tasks felt like training for a marathon and you found it difficult to keep your eyes open. Pregnancy is like that in the beginning and through much of the first trimester. If you are feeling a level of fatigue that is out of the ordinary, you might be pregnant. Do yourself a favor and take a nap and a pregnancy test. You’ll feel better.

Still don’t know if you’re pregnant?

If you suspect you might be pregnant, don’t panic. Pregnancy symptoms vary in individual women as well as individual pregnancies. Not every pregnancy will carry with it the same signs and symptoms.

This guide is a great tool but is not meant to replace a lab quality pregnancy test or ultrasound, which can be obtained free of charge at Harmony Women’s Care.
